Preventing Frozen Pipes

North Royalton, OH

With freezing temperatures impacting Northeast Ohio, now is the time to take steps to protect your home’s plumbing from frozen pipes — one of the most common winter plumbing issues we see. Simple preventative measures can go a long way, such as keeping cabinet doors open under sinks to allow warm air to circulate, letting faucets drip slightly during extreme cold, insulating exposed pipes in basements, crawl spaces, garages, and exterior walls, disconnecting hoses, shutting off exterior spigots, and keeping your thermostat set at a consistent temperature day and night. If you suspect a pipe may already be frozen, act quickly but safely. Turn the faucet on slightly to check for reduced water flow, and never use open flames to thaw pipes. Instead, apply gentle heat using a hair dryer, heating pad, or warm towels, and keep the faucet open while thawing to help relieve pressure. If a pipe bursts, shut off your main water supply immediately and contact a professional plumber right away. Frozen pipes can lead to serious water damage if not addressed properly. If you’re unsure what’s happening or want peace of mind during these cold snaps, the family-owned team at Beetles Plumbing Solutions is here to help keep your home protected and your plumbing flowing all winter long.
